StudyAbroad: Australia needs Indian workers in IT, hospitality

AbroasStudy: The Australian High Commissioner to India, Harinder Sidhu, on Friday said the country will continue to need skilled workers from India in sectors such as IT and hospitality, and that Australia's new work visa norms will have little impact on Indians.

Last month, to tackle growing unemployment, Australia announced its decision to discontinue the 457 visa for skilled workers, which allows businesses to employ foreign workers for up to four years. The visa is used by thousands of foreign workers, a majority of them Indians.

Sidhu told TOI that the 457 work visa "hasn't ceased to exist" but is being replaced by two different classes of temporary visa - a short-term visa and a medium-term visa.

The UK and Australia are among the top performers when countries are assessed on how supportive their policy environments are of international higher education, a study says.
